DECEMBER KEY POINTS

Livestock and meat production monthly trend movements for December 2016:
  • Cattle slaughter increased by 13,000 or 2% for December 2016 when compared with November 2016 and there was a year-on-year decrease of 73,400 head or 11%.
  • The number of calves slaughtered in December 2016 decreased by 2% when compared to both month-on-month and year-on-year periods.
  • Sheep slaughter in December 2016 decreased by 1% compared with November 2016 and was down 173,700 head or 25% year-on-year.
  • Lamb slaughters increased by 69,300 head or 4% for December 2016. Compared with December 2015, slaughters increased by 105,000 head or 5%.
  • Pig slaughter held steady for the month of December, decreasing by 974 head when compared to November 2016 and continued to increase year-on-year with slaughters up 10,600 head or 3% on this period last year.
